The night
On a fairy-lit rooftop behind Lalbagh Fort, the youngest daughter of a Chawkbazar cloth-trading family is having her Gaye Holud. Her maternal uncle, Shamsu Mama, is paying for every marigold and writing every taka into his cloth-bound khata. At 21:10, in the middle of his daughter's TikTok rehearsal, the power cuts out. At 21:40 Mama slumps over his own steel jug of low-salt borhani, and by 22:20 the call comes from Mitford Hospital: he is dead of an overdose of his own heart tablets. The bride, her mother, her brother, Mama's wife, Mama's daughter and the groom's event-planner cousin all had holud on their hands and a reason. A rishta aunty who owes Mama money, the groom's snooping younger brother, a lovesick videographer and a pigeon-keeping neighbour with a hooked electricity line make the night much messier. The police from Lalbagh thana arrive in the morning. Until then, nobody leaves the roof.
Heads-up: A death by deliberate overdose of the victim's own heart medicine (off-stage, non-graphic), Grief and family money disputes during a wedding, Comic references to an illegally hooked electricity line.
