Biswanath, Sylhet: pink houses, marble floors and a cousin in Tower Hamlets for every family. Tonight's Londoni bari has a pond and bathing ghat out front, a paan garden out back and, upstairs, a London room locked for 5 years.
At 17:30 London Chacha, who ran a Mile End curry house for 31 years, arrived with Quality Street, Vimto and gold. At dinner he declared his chef's shatkora better, reserved the pond-side plot 'for someone special', and promised to check everyone's accounts before signing.
Just after 21:00 he went upstairs and asked for his tea, strong and sugarless. By 23:30 he was gone, and the doctor said pesticide. The police come at first light, and nobody leaves the bari. Tomorrow's accounts died with him, unless someone reads them tonight.
