Tajmahal Road, Mohammadpur, on a Friday evening. The flat smells of shingara, room freshener and nerves. The good cream sofa covers are on, the ones kept for Eid and proposals. At 18:30 the groom's family arrives with roshogolla and their best biodata.
Rehana Khala, Mohammadpur's ghotok, takes her evening tablet at 19:05 and asks for sugar-free tea. At 19:40 she drinks every drop from her blue-rimmed cup. By 20:10 she has slid sideways on the good sofa cover. The doctor says someone gave her far too much of her own medicine.
Her green cloth notebook has never been read. She matched half this room and knew the other half's real numbers. Every biodata here was polished: heights, salaries, houses, Canada. The police are stuck behind a bus at Asad Gate. Nobody leaves. One guest is hiding more than a few inches.
