Satmasjid Road, Dhanmondi, on a Friday in late December. A community centre glows with fairy lights, a traffic jam idles outside, and at least one cousin has not slept since the holud. At 19:00 the bride's side blocks the gate with a ribbon and a price list.
Rafsan, the groom's best friend and negotiator, talks the gate fee down to Tk 3,000. At 19:40 the groom's nagra vanishes from under the stage sofa. The shoe squad wants Tk 50,000 by bKash. At 20:41 he downs his borhani, no ice, extra lebu; at 20:50 he stops mid-sentence.
By 21:40 he is dead: a heavy dose of a prescription sedative. A Sub-Inspector from Dhanmondi Thana has closed the gate. The squad swears each of its three members moved the nagra once, yet nobody will say where it is. Everyone here had a reason, mostly money.
